A great save is only as good as the outrageous call made by the play-by-play guy.
OK, that’s not entirely true, but listen to Antti Makinen’s terrific reaction to Pekka Rinne‘s diving stop from Monday’s Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final and try not to smile.
Makinen has been covered in this space before, from his animated call of Joonas Donskoi’s overtime winner from last year’s final, to Chris Johnston’s feature calling Makinen the doer of “the loneliest job in hockey.”
There’s never been a Finnish winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy before, but Rinne has a legitimate shot at breaking that ice with his gaudy playoff numbers this spring.
The 34-year-old Predators lifer has a 1.88 goals-against average and a .932 save percentage with Nashville just two wins away from its first Stanley Cup.
If he can keep up his stellar play we could see some serious history being made by the end of this series. And here’s hoping there would be more crazy Finnish play-by-play to match.
