Hockey Canada to discuss state of sport

MONTREAL — Hockey Canada has opted to hold summits on the state of the sport across the country, starting in Quebec.

The Molson Export Quebec Hockey Summit is to be held Aug. 26-27 at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

It is based on summits held in 1999 and 2010 in Toronto.

Scott Smith, CEO of Hockey Canada, said a similar meeting is being planned for Ontario and that others may be held in other parts of the country.

The Quebec Summit will focus on player development, safety and injuries, and recruitment.

Hockey Canada’s annual board of governors meeting will be held the same week and its members will participate in the summit.

Smith said hockey in Canada is strong, as shown with gold medals in both men’s and women’s team at the 2010 Olympics, but "a big part of leadership is never being totally satisfied with where you are and always looking for new initiatives to make you even better."
