Jarome Iginla is getting a new number when he joins the Los Angeles Kings.
That’s right, No. 88.
Ever since making his debut with the Calgary Flames in 1996, Iginla has worn No. 12. But with Marian Gaborik already in possession of the number in L.A., Iginla is making the switch.
In an interview with Lisa Dillman of NHL.com, Iginla explained why he chose his new number.
“True story,” Iginla told Dillman. “One of the only jerseys I ever bought was when (Wayne) Gretzky got traded to the Kings. I was a huge Oiler fan growing up and I bought a Kings jersey and put on No. 88 and I put my name on the back. I was about 10 years old.”
He also told Dillman that it never crossed his mind to ask Gaborik to give up No. 12 for him.
“That’s his number and he’s been very successful with it,” Iginla said. “He’s played a long time, too. That’s his and I wouldn’t even want to ask.”
