Mike Keenan has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the Kunlun Red Star, the team has announced.

The news comes less than a week after Keenan was fired from his general manager duties with the China-based KHL club. At the time, he was expected to keep his job as head coach.

Keenan has been replaced behind the bench by Bobby Carpenter on an interim basis, but will remain with the franchise as an executive member of Kunlun’s International Advisory Board, according to the official press release. Raitis Pilsetnieks was named Keenan’s replacement as GM.

Keenan first made the move over the KHL in the 2013-14 season, when he led Magnitogorsk Metallurg to the Gagarin Cup. He was hired by the Red Star in March 2017.

The longtime bench boss coached 1,386 NHL games between 1984 and 2009, and won the Stanley Cup with the New York Rangers in 1993-94.
