Habs, ex-NHLer Robitaille to discuss GM job

The Montreal Canadiens are planning to reach out to Los Angeles Kings executive Luc Robitaille in their search for a new general manager.

Sources tell Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos that the Canadiens are interested in speaking with the 46-year-old Montreal native, who is currently the Kings’ president of business operations.

Robitaille has been in the Kings’ front office since 2007, and also fills a key requirement by being both French- and English-speaking.

Pierre Gauthier was fired as the Canadiens GM on March 29. Former Canadiens great Serge Savard is taking the lead on the search for his replacement.

Robitaille played 19 seasons in the NHL — mostly with Los Angeles — and retired after the 2005-06 season as the highest scoring left winger in NHL history. He also won a Stanley Cup in 2002 while with the Detroit Red Wings.

He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2009.
