Luongo buys ad in Vancouver newspaper to thank Canucks fans

Iain MacIntyre covered Roberto Luongo with the Vancouver Canucks and looks at the impact he had on the team and city.

Roberto Luongo began his NHL tenure with the New York Islanders and it ended with the Florida Panthers, however the best seasons of the star goalie’s career were when he wore a Vancouver Canucks uniform.

The 40-year-old took out an ad in the Vancouver Province one day after announcing his retirement to thank the Canucks faithful for the role they’ve played in his life.

Luongo spent eight seasons with the Canucks from 2006-2014 en route to becoming the franchise’s all-time leader in wins.

The three-time Vezina Trophy finalist shared the William M. Jennings Trophy with his friend Cory Schneider in 2011, the same year the duo led the team to a Stanley Cup Final appearance against the Boston Bruins.

Luongo also won an Olympic gold medal with Team Canada in 2010 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver in front of his home crowd.

“I want to take a moment to thank the people of Vancouver,” Luongo wrote in his retirement letter. “I’ll never forget the impact that city and their fans made not only on my career, but on my life as well. They will always hold a special place in my heart.”
