William Nylander did not attend practice with the Dornbirn Bulldogs on Tuesday morning after skating with the Austrian-based pro team multiple times in the last week.
The 22-year-old winger has been welcomed in by the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga side while waiting out his contract impasse with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Nylander’s younger sister, Jacquline, trains at the tennis centre adjacent to their arena.
Following a meeting with Leafs GM Kyle Dubas in Zurich last Wednesday, Nylander practised with the Bulldogs three times. He also used their ice Monday during an off-day for the Dornbirn players, but head coach Dave MacQueen isn’t sure if he intends to return.
Negotiations continue on a contract to bring Nylander back to the Leafs. Dubas spoke with his North American agent, Lewis Gross, before Sunday’s Rangers-Flames game at Madison Square Garden and again on Monday in New York City.
The sides are believed to be working on a shorter-term bridge contract after being unable to navigate the wide gap on a longer deal. They need to reach an agreement by Dec. 1 for the restricted free agent to be eligible to play this season.
Nylander has remained in Europe since his Leafs teammates reported for training camp in mid-September. Prior to arriving in Austria, he’d been skating in Stockholm with skills coach Jocke Ahlgren.
