Maple Leafs sign defender Cody Ceci to one-year deal

NHL insider Renaud Lavoie joins Sportsnet 590 The FAN to discuss the Maple Leafs signing Cody Ceci for one year, at $4.5 million, and why he thinks it's a great chance for the defenceman to prove he's worth every penny.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed defenceman Cody Ceci to a one-year, $4.5-million deal, the club announced Thursday.

Ceci, 25, was acquired from Ottawa in the six-player July 1 swap that saw defender Nikita Zaitsev moved to the Senators.

The Ottawa, Ont., native posted 26 points through 74 games in 2018-19, matching the career high he set back in 2015-16. Ceci was originally drafted 15th overall by the Senators in 2012.

With his $4.5-million deal in tow, Ceci now ranks as the second-highest-paid defenceman on the Leafs’ roster, behind only Morgan Rielly’s $5 million per year. Rielly remains the only Leafs defenceman signed past next season.
