In honour of New York Rangers forward Sean Avery sucker punching Edmonton Oilers defenceman Ladislav Smid on Sunday, we’ve decided to bring you some of the most infamous NHL cheap shots.
We searched the archives and came up with the Todd Bertuzzi breaking Steve Moore’s neck in 2004, Dale Hunter’s vicious elbow on Pierre Turgeon during a 1993 playoff goal celebration, as well as Marty McSorley using his stick on Donald Brashear in 2000. Finally, we also chose a pair of infamous Tie Domi moments from his time with the Maple Leafs. First, his sucker punch of Ulf Samuelsson in 1995 and his 2001 playoff hit on Devils defenceman Scott Niedermayer that left teammate Scott Stevens in a rage.
In our opinion, the worst of the bunch would be Bertuzzi driving Moore into the ice back in 2004. That incident as well as McSorley’s stick work on Brashear in 2000 both resulted in off-ice criminal investigations.
