Oilers acquire Mike Green from Red Wings for Brodziak, pick

Mark Spector and Gene Principe look at the trade the Oilers made for defenceman Mike Green.

The Edmonton Oilers have acquired defenceman Mike Green from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for forward Kyle Brodziak and a conditional draft pick in either 2020 or 2021.

The pick will be a fourth-round selection in 2020, but will become a third-rounder in 2021 if Edmonton reaches the conference final this spring and Green appears in half the Oilers’ games. Detroit retains half of Green’s salary-cap hit, which works out to about $2.7 million.

Green, who is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2019-20 campaign, has three goals and eight assists in 48 games with Detroit this season. The 34-year-old has spent the past four-plus years with the Red Wings after 10 seasons with the Washington Capitals.

Brodziak, 35, was on long-term injured reserve due to a back issue that forced him to retire in September.
