Oilers’ Leon Draisaitl fined for spearing Tierney

Leon Draisaitl was given the gate after a blatant spear to the private parts of Chris Tierney in a frustrating, lopsided game against the Sharks.

Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl will be available for Game 5 against the San Jose Sharks.

The NHL announced on Wednesday that Draisaitl avoided suspension and will be fined for spearing Sharks forward Chris Tierney in the groin in Game 4 of the first-round series.

Draisaitl had a hearing with the league’s department of player safety to determine any consequences. The infraction will cost him US$2,569.44, the maximum allowable under the CBA.

The incident occurred at 13:44 of the second period. Draisaitl was assessed a major penalty for spearing and a game misconduct.

San Jose went on to a 7-0 win in Game 4 to even the series 2-2.

Edmonton hosts Game 5 on Thursday.
