Patrick Wiercioch did not receive a qualifying offer from the Ottawa Senators, but the Colorado Avalanche think there’s value to be added here, signing the 25-year-old defenceman to a one-year contract worth $800,000.

Wiercioch was a second-round pick (42nd overall) of the Senators’ in 2008, but never played more than 56 games in a season with Ottawa. This past season, Wiercioch played 52 games, earning five assists and posting 24 penalty minutes before the team let him walk.

However, Wiercioch’s underlying numbers are strong and he was pointed to as a potential under the radar signing by Sportsnet analytics writer Dimitri Filipovic.
