The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed forward Brandon Tanev on the opening day of NHL free agency.

Per the team, the contract is a six-year pact and carries a $3.5 million cap hit through the 2024-25 campaign.

In Tanev, Pittsburgh gets a defensively-responsible winger and a depth scoring option who is also strong on special teams — he averaged 2:08 minutes per game on the penalty kill last season in Winnipeg, which ranks him second-most on the Jets.

The 27-year-old is coming off a career-best 14-goal, 29-point campaign with the Winnipeg Jets in 2018-19, with whom he has spent his entire NHL career to date.
