The Pittsburgh Penguins signed defenceman Marcus Pettersson to a five-year contract extension on Tuesday with an average annual value of $4,025,175.
Pettersson, 23, is in his second season with the Penguins and has 15 points in 50 games this season.
His new deal will kick in at the start of next season.
Pittsburgh GM Jim Rutherford says Pettersson has made a significant impact on the team’s defensive group since being acquired from the Anaheim Ducks on Dec. 3, 2018.
“He is young, reliable and smart, which is important in today’s game,” Rutherford said in a statement. “Marcus is part of our young core and it was important to get him signed long-term.”
The Swede ranks fourth on the team in hits (78) and blocked shots (57) this season.
