Philadelphia Flyers sign Brian Elliott to two-year contract

Goaltender Brian Elliott joins Hockey Central to talk about signing with the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Philadelphia Flyers have locked up a goaltender on the first day of free agency.

Brian Elliott has signed a two-year deal worth $5.5 million total, or $2.75 million against the salary cap. The 32-year-old spent 2016-17 with the Calgary Flames. After a slow start he recovered to lead the Flames into the playoffs with season-long totals of .910 save percentage and 2.55 goals-against average. He won 26 games in 49 appearances.

Elliott has previously played for the Ottawa Senators, Colorado Avalanche and St. Louis Blues.

The acquisition of Elliott secures Philadelphia’s situation in goal for the next two years at a good price. Along with Elliott, 29-year-old Michal Neuvirth is signed for the next two years with a $2.5 million cap hit, meaning the team has committed a total of $5.25 million in cap space to the position.

Elliott, whose largest workload came in 2009-10 and 2010-11 when he played 55 games in each season, has more recently been used as part of a tandem with the Blues and Flames. He won the William M. Jennings Trophy in 2011-12 with a 1.56 GAA in 38 games.
