Photos: James Reimer’s new ‘Optimus Reim’ Leafs mask

Toronto Maple Leafs netminder James Reimer talks about the goaltending battle with Jonathan Bernier and being that number one the team leans on.

Both Toronto Maple Leafs netminders will be sporting new masks this NHL season.

Less than a week after Jonathan Bernier unveiled his new David Gunnarsson helmet, @artofdave released images of James Reimer’s new-look “Optimus Reim” mask on social media Sunday.

“This new design is once again based on his nickname Optimus Reim,” Gunnarsson wrote in a Facebook post. “It is a mix of an action design with action paintings, and when you come closer a new world of details opens up, you will find the blue prints of the construction of Optimus Reim!

“On a distance it is a classic Maple Leafs design with the Leaf in focus, and when you look closer the mask transform in front of your eyes, just like a real Transformer.”

Here are some more looks at the mask, via Gunnarsson’s Facebook page.

In 35 appearances for the Maple Leafs in 2014-15, Reimer posted a record of 9-16-1 with a 3.16 goals-against-average and a .907 save percentage. The 27-year-old is set to become an unrestricted free agent after this season.
