Report: Citi Field in New York could host 2018 Winter Classic

The now-annual tradition of an outdoor NHL game on New Year’s Day will be back in 2018 and this time it could make its New York debut.

According to a report from Newsday’s Arthur Staple, two sources confirmed that an outdoor game between the Buffalo Sabres and New York Rangers at Citi Field on Jan. 1 was “close to being finalized.”

Citi Field is home to the National League’s New York Mets and is located in Queens.

There have been many rumours that the Rangers could play in an outdoor game at West Point, but if this report is true that game would appear highly unlikely.

The Rangers have been involved in two outdoor games before, but never a Winter Classic. They hosted the Devils and Islanders at Yankee Stadium in 2014. The Sabres hosted the 2008 Winter Classic at Ralph Wilson Stadium against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
