The Dallas Stars have approached the San Jose Sharks about the availability of captain Joe Thornton, according to Kevin Kurz of CSNBayarea.com.

Outside of Tyler Seguin the Stars are lacking in centres who can produce significant offence.

Thornton has three years remaining on his contract that includes a no-movement clause with a salary cap hit of $6.75 million. The 34-year-old had 11 goals, 65 assists in 82 games last season, but tallied just three points in seven playoff games.

The Sharks are looking to shake things up after under-performing in the post-season once again following a strong regular season. Sharks general manager Doug Wilson traded away pending unrestricted free agent Dan Boyle, will use a compliance buyout on Martin Havlat and announced that Brent Burns will move from the wing back to the blue line.

Thornton has 1,194 points in 1,207 career regular season games and 100 points in 132 playoffs games; he was drafted first overall by the Boston Bruins in 1997.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have also reportedly shown interest in the St. Thomas, Ont., native. Thornton would have to agree to waive his no-movement clause before Wilson could pull the trigger on any deal.
