Sharks’ Tomas Hertl out for remainder of season with torn ACL, MCL

Tomas Hertl was slow to get up and had to exit the game after an awkward collision in the boards.

San Jose Sharks forward Tomas Hertl will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL and MCL in his left knee, the team announced on Thursday.

Hertl was forced to leave Wednesday’s game against the Vancouver Canucks early and was unable to return as he underwent further evaluation.

The 26-year-old skated just 1:10 over three shifts before sustaining his injury while charging toward the Canucks’ net. He took a backhand shot on Vancouver netminder Jacob Markstrom and then appeared to have his lower body pinned against the boards inadvertently by defencemen Chris Tanev and Quinn Hughes.

Before the injury, Hertl managed to score the game’s first goal, snapping a nine-game goalless streak.

The 2020 NHL all-star has 16 goals and 36 points in 48 games with San Jose this season.
