Ron and Don: Brad Marchand must ‘stop that nonsense’

Don Cherry and Ron MacLean discuss the play of Connor Hellebuyck in the first period. Brad Marchand and his constant kissing as well as praise for his teammate Patrice Bergeron

Don Cherry is upset with Brad Marchand‘s actions on the ice and believes the Boston Bruins forward is getting non-calls from referees as a result.

“You never do this,” Cherry said Saturday night during his Coach’s Corner segment about Marchand licking his opponents. “I don’t know why he’s doing it. When you do stuff like that, you embarrass the referee.”

Marchand licked the face of Tampa Bay Lightning forward Ryan Callahan in the second period of Friday night’s 4-3 Bruins overtime loss. He promptly received a warning from the NHL.

The Bruins winger licked the neck of Toronto forward Leo Komarov during their first-round matchup.

Cherry believes Marchand’s actions are costing him calls on the ice. One example came during the third period of Game 2 against Tampa Bay when Marchand was whacked by a Lighting player while on a breakaway, yet no penalty was called.

“Referees [remember] when you do stupid things,” Cherry said. “You know what I think of Marchand. I think he’s great, but you got to stop that nonsense.”
