Two days ahead of the anniversary of D-Day, which saw Canadian troops invade the beaches of Normandy alongside British and American soldiers in 1944, Don Cherry and Ron MacLean paid tribute to the military on Monday’s Coach’s Corner segment.
Cherry and MacLean were joined by Gen. Mark A. Milley, the U.S. Army’s Chief of Staff, who spoke to the duo about his own connection to hockey.
Milley played four years for Princeton University in the late 70’s, donning the ‘C’ for a team that featured more than a few Canadians on the roster.
“Hockey’s always been a part of my life,” he said. “Growing up, my brother and I both played and my dad played before us and then went off to college.”
Growing up in Massachusetts, Milley remembers cheering on the Boston Bruins when No. 4 was dominating for the B’s.
“I think, probably, everyone in Boston’s favourite player is Bobby Orr,” he said. “I grew up [watching] Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, Johnny Bucyk, Gerry Cheevers, all those guys.
“I was a kid playing, and they were kind of our idols, the Big Bad Bruins. That was quite a team.”
