Don Cherry thinks Patrik Laine should stay out of the rough stuff.
The Winnipeg Jets winger, who entered Saturday tied for the league lead in goals with 21, would be better off playing a more gentlemanly game, Cherry put forth on Coach’s Corner.
“I got a little suggestion for Laine, he is a five-goal (in one game) scorer guy, he’s gotta stop this here,” said Cherry, over clips of Laine mixing it up with St. Louis Blues defenceman Rob Bortuzzo.
“He’s gotta stop stuff like that.”
Cherry has had similar advice in the past for Sidney Crosby, bringing up Montreal Canadiens great Guy Lafleur, who minded his own business on the ice and wouldn’t be distracted by physical play.
“Lafleur, he used to take it just the same, (and) he would never look at anybody. He wouldn’t go after anybody,” said Cherry.
“Lafleur wouldn’t look at anybody, and that’s why he got 52 goals, (and) nobody touched him. Laine, you gotta be like Lafleur and you’ll be a lot better off than going after guys like Bortuzzo.”
