Tikhonov leaves KHL, signs with Chicago

Viktor Tikhonov has signed with the Chicago Blackhawks (Darko Bandic/AP).

Viktor Tikhonov is not only returning the the National Hockey League, he’s joining the champs.

The first-round draft pick out of Russia inked a one-year, $1.04-million deal with the Chicago Blackhawks Wednesday upon the opening of free agency.

The 27-year-old right wing spent the past four seasons in the Kontinental Hockey League with SKA St. Petersburg. Last season he scored eight goals and added 16 assists in 49 games.

Drafted 28th overall in 2008 by the Phoenix Coyotes, Tikhonov posted 16 points in 61 games with Phoenix in 2008-09, his lone NHL season.

His grandfather, Viktor, served as the head coach of the Soviet Union national team from 1977 to 1994.
