The Buffalo Sabres have reached an agreement with forward C.J. Smith on a one-year, two-way contract worth $874,125.
The five-foot-11, 181-pound Smith made his debut with the Sabres in 2016-17, recording one assist in two games. The Iowa native’s first full professional season came with the AHL’s Rochester Americans in 2017-18, where he registered 44 points across 57 games. That point total ranked third among Rochester skaters that campaign.
Smith was named to the 2018 AHL All-Star Challenge for his efforts and continued to shine on that stage, finishing with five points en route to Most Valuable Player honours.
The 23-year-old tallied 125 points in 120 games during his three-year college career at University of Massachusetts Lowell, earning Hockey East All-Tournament Team recognition in his last two collegiate seasons. He later signed with the Sabres as a free agent in March 2017.
