Sabres forward Evander Kane to miss ‘weeks’ with cracked ribs

Kane was racing to get to a dumped puck late in the second period when it appeared he lost an edge and crashed hard into the boards. He would need assistance to leave the game.

Buffalo Sabres forward Evander Kane has three cracked ribs and will miss “weeks,” the team’s head coach Dan Bylsma told reporters Friday. The exact timeline for his recovery is to be determined.

Kane sustained the injury after crashing hard into the boards while racing for a puck in the second period of Thursday’s 4-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens. The 25-year-old was seen writhing in pain on the ice before being helped to the locker room.

The Sabres were already in a bind, beginning the season without franchise centre Jack Eichel who suffered a high ankle sprain earlier in the week. They are, however, expected to get Kyle Okposo back for their game in Edmonton against the Oilers Sunday.
