Hockey Day in Canada to cap off 4-day celebration in Swift Current

Mark down Feb. 9 in your calendars as Scotiabank Hockey Day In Canada heads to Swift Current, SK to celebrate Canada's favourite game.

Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada is heading to Swift Current, Sask.

The annual hockey celebration, now in its 19th year, will begin on Feb. 6 with a full schedule of community events including school visits, hockey clinics, visits from the Stanley Cup and several NHL alumni, and of course some good old fashioned shinny. The schedule for the four-day celebration was announced on Wednesday.

The event will culminate on Saturday, Feb. 9 with a day-long national broadcast of Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada hosted by Ron MacLean live from Riverdene Park. Sportsnet will be sharing stories of Swift Current’s rich hockey history throughout the day, which will also feature all seven Canadian NHL teams in action.

“We look forward to showcasing our community through the stories that will be told, through the people and organizations that will be attending, sponsoring, playing, and volunteering throughout this event,” Robin Wall, Chair of the Local Organizing Committee, said in a press release.

The festivities in Swift Current will come to a close with a Saturday night WHL matchup between the Swift Current Broncos and Saskatoon Blades, which will include a live rinkside edition of Coach’s Corner with MacLean and Don Cherry.

NHL alumni in attendance will include Lanny McDonald, Darcy Tucker, Cassie Campbell-Pascall, Wendel Clark, Chris Neil, Chris Phillips, and Glenn Healy among others.

“Sportsnet is thrilled to bring this year’s edition of Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada to Swift Current to celebrate the game with NHL alumni, Sportsnet personalities and many special family-friendly events over the four days,” added Joel Darling, Executive Producer of NHL Special Events for Sportsnet. “Our theme for our national broadcast is courage and we will tell stories from Swift Current and across the country about how courage and hockey are so closely linked.”

This will be the third time Hockey Day lands in Saskatchewan. Nearby Shaunavon, Sask. hosted in 2004, and the event was held in Lloydminster, Alta./Sask. in 2014.
