Joe Thornton‘s Hall of Fame career will continue for at least one more season.
The long-time San Jose Shark confirmed to media at the NHL Awards in Las Vegas that he plans on playing next season and potentially beyond that.
Thornton, who turns 40 on July 2, does not have a contract with the Sharks yet for next season. He’s coming off his second-consecutive one-year deal, and earned $5 million last season.
The St. Thomas, Ont., native appeared in 73 games in 2018-19, scoring 16 goals and 51 points. He added another four goals and 10 points in 19 playoff games.
Through 1,566 career games, Thornton has 413 goals, 1,065 assists and 1,478 points. He currently ranks eighth all-time in assists and 14th in points.
