Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby added yet another highlight-reel goal to his already stacked resume Thursday, as he scored his third of the playoffs, one which had the hockey world buzzing.

In the second period of the Pens’ 4-0 win over the New York Islanders in Game 5 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series, with the Pens already up 2-0, Crosby dangled between Islanders blue-liners Lubomir Visnovsky and Thomas Hickey and wired a wrist shot past Evgeni Nabokov.

Not only was the goal itself phenomenal, but it garnered immediate comparisons to a famous tally Penguins great Mario Lemieux scored against the Islanders in 1988 when No. 66 skated through Rich Pilon and Jeff Norton at the old Civic Arena.

The Lemieux goal that Crosby’s resembled is so iconic in fact that a statue called “Le Magnifique” in which Lemieux is captured skating past Pilon and Norton sits outside the CONSOL Energy Center.

The Penguins now lead the series 3-2 and have the chance to eliminate the Islanders Saturday in Game 6 on Long Island.

Since returning from a broken jaw, Crosby has been on fire with eight points in four playoff games.

Earlier on Thursday, Crosby was nominated for the Ted Lindsay Award that is handed out annually to the NHL’s most outstanding player in the regular season as voted on by members of the NHL Players’ Association.
