Tomas Plekanec has signed a contract with Czech Extraliga club HC Kometa Brno. Plekanec will also play for his hometown HC Kladno in the second division, the team owned by Jaromir Jagr.

Czech rules permit a player to suit up for two teams if one is in the top league and the other is in the second tier.

Brno has won the Extraliga championship in each of the past two seasons, while Kladno hopes Plekanec will help them return to the country’s top flight.

Plekanec retired from the NHL earlier this month after being placed on waivers by the Montreal Canadiens. The 36-year-old recorded 233 goals and 375 assists over 1,001 games. Almost all of his NHL career was spent with the Canadiens, other than a 17-game stint with Toronto at the end of the 2017-18 season.
