Roman Polak of the Toronto Maple Leafs is being shut down for the year.

The defenceman is set to undergo season-ending hernia surgery, the team announced Monday.

In his first season with the Maple Leafs after being acquired in a trade with the St. Louis last summer, Polak registered nine points in 56 games and was praised for his toughness and leadership.

The decision to shut Polak down comes just one day after the team announced fellow veteran blueliner Stephane Robidas was done for the year after electing to have shoulder surgery.

To fill the hole on the blue-line, Petter Granberg was recalled from the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League. The 22-year-old has played six games with the Maple Leafs this season.

The Maple Leafs host the New York Islanders Monday. Fans can watch the game on Sportsnet Ontario with coverage starting at 7 p.m. EST. NHL Regional Restrictions apply.
