One might assume that if a casting director is charged with the task of bringing in NHL players for a major motion picture titled This Is 40, they could do no wrong by assembling Martin Brodeur, Ray Whitney, Daniel Alfredsson and Jaromir Jagr.
Instead, it’s a crew of Philadelphia Flyers (at the time) who land a memorable cameo role, opposite the spicy Megan Fox no less, in the new Judd Apatow comedy, perhaps because the camera loved them so much in HBO’s 24/7.
In a 47-second clip from the film titled “Debbie and Desi party with the Philadelphia Flyers,” Ian Laperriere (now retired), Matt Carle (now of the Tampa Bay Lightning), Scott Hartnell, and James van Riemsdyk (now of the Toronto Maple Leafs) chat up the lead female characters at a bar.
The highlight? A tie between Fox’s trying on Laperriere’s false teeth and Hartnell’s acting laugh.
Rumours that the editors tried to digitally swap JVR with Luke Schenn in postproduction remain unconfirmed as the film hits theatres Friday.
