Hockey violence, namely fighting, is among the most contentious topics in all of sports, but there wasn’t much of a debate over Ray Emery’s antics in Friday night’s fight fest in Philadelphia.
Wayne Simmonds started the melee shortly after the lowly Flyers went down 7-0 to Washington in the third period, crashing into several Capitals players before finding a willing opponent in rookie Tom Wilson. But all hell broke loose once Flyers goalie and Mike Tyson superfan Ray Emery skated the length of the ice and laid a beat down on Caps goalie Braden Holtby, who clearly had no interest in dropping the gloves. That sparked more fights, as everybody on the ice paired off and threw down before the referees eventually stepped in and put an end to the madness.
After it was all said and done, 114 penalty minutes were doled out, Vincent Lecavalier lost some teeth, Steve Downie suffered a concussion, Emery was named the third star of the game (seriously) and Twitter laid a beatdown of its own on the Flyers goaltender.
