The idea of John Tavares not returning to the New York Islanders is not sitting well with some fans of the team.
After midnight June 30 — the deadline for the 27-year-old centre to sign a max, eight-year extension with the Islanders — passed without a new contract in place, most fans took it as sign that their franchise centre would be taking his talents elsewhere once the free agent signing period opened at 12 p.m. ET July 1.
The Athletic’s Arthur Staple confirmed the star centre would be moving on from the Islanders shortly after the UFA market opened.
And then came the big news: Toronto had landed Tavares, signing him to a seven-year contract.
