Why Marchand should be suspended for cheap shot

Watch as Bruins’ winger Brad Marchand slew foots Rangers’ centreman Derick Brassard, who goes down and hit the boards hard.

Brad Marchand is back at it.

One of the most notorious players in the NHL threw another cheap slew foot on opponent Derick Brassard Thursday night, despite what the Bruins broadcasters said about the play. Marchand was not penalized on the play.

Marchand, who has been fined $2,500 once before for a slew foot he threw on Matt Niskanen, will surely receive a call from Stephane Quintal and the NHL’s supplemental discipline department over this one. The league is reviewing the play tonight.

As you can see in this supplemental discipline standards video Brendan Shanahan created while he was head of that department, Marchand’s transgression is perfect example of a suspendable/fineable cheap shot. As the video clearly states, if you sweep out the legs “in close proximity to the boards, causing a dangerous situation,” your hit will be acted upon.

Oh, and the slew foot Marchand was previously fined on can also be seen in this tutorial.

Brassard was asked about the play after the game:
