Wild sign Jared Spurgeon to 4-year extension

Watch as Jared Spurgeon scores off a saucer pass that never lands, hitting the puck out of mid-air.

The Minnesota Wild have reached an agreement on an extension with defenceman Jared Spurgeon, keeping the defenceman under contract until the end of the 2019-2020 season.

Spurgeon will earn $20.75 million over the four years, with a cap hit north of $5-million.

He is the second-highest scoring defenceman on the Wild this year, with 16 points (4G, 12A) in 31 games.

The 26-year-old is currently in the final year of a three-year $8-million deal and would have been a restricted free agent this off-season.

His average playing time of 22:15 is second on the team.

The Wild signed Spurgeon as a free agent after the Edmonton, Alta. native failed to reach an agreement with the New York Islanders, who drafted him 156th overall in 2008.
