Blazers' Kyle Masters leaves Memorial Cup game vs. Petes on stretcher

Kamloops Blazers defenceman Kyle Masters is awake and moving all of his extremities after being taken off the ice on a stretcher after a collision in the third period of a Memorial Cup game against the Peterborough Petes.

The play occurred after the Petes had dumped the puck into the offensive zone. Masters retrieved the puck and attempted to move it up the ice. Masters fanned on the puck but as he turned his body he was hit by Petes forward Brennan Othmann. The hit knocked Masters hard into the boards and he did not get up.

After close to 10 minutes of being tended to by medical staff from both teams, Masters was lifted onto a stretcher and taken off the ice. Cameras caught Masters giving a thumbs-up to the fans who were applauding as he left the ice.

Masters was taken to Royal Inland Hospital Emergency Department to get further examination.

Masters, 20, was a fourth-round draft pick by the Minnesota Wild in 2021. The Edmonton native had 65 points in 66 regular season games for the Blazers.

Othmann did not receive a penalty on the play.

The Blazers won the game 10-2.
