QUEBEC — Nikolas Hurtubise made 18 saves as the Victoriaville Tigres blanked the Charlottetown Islanders 2-0 on Tuesday to advance to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League championship.
Shawn Element scored the winner at 15:52 of the second period while Benjamin Tardif added an empty netter to help Victoriaville take Game 5 and the third-round series 3-2.
Colten Ellis stopped 21-of-22 shots for the Islanders, who went 35-5-0 in the regular season to finish No. 1 in the standings with an .875 win percentage.
Victoriaville, which went 16-9-1 in the regular season, will face the Val-d’Or Foreurs in a best-of-seven series for the President Cup that begins Thursday.
The Tigres have gone 9-4-0 in the post-season to set up a date with the No. 2 team, Val-d’Or, which went 29-3-4 in the regular season (.861).
The Foreurs are 9-0 in the playoffs, sweeping all three of their series to reach the final. They won their final eight regular-season games and are riding a 17-game win streak.
