WHL Roundup: Trent Miner stays hot with 33 saves, leads Giants over Cougars

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — Trent Miner kicked out 33-of-34 shots as the Vancouver Giants edged the Prince George Cougars 2-1 on Monday in Western Hockey League play.

Miner improved to 6-2-0 with a 1.18 goals-against average and .952 save percentage to go along with four shutouts in 2020-21.

Eric Florchuk opened the scoring while Adam Hall put home the winner at 11:30 of the third period to help the Giants (8-3-0) to a third straight victory.

Riley Heidt found the back of the net for the Cougars (4-5-2), who got 27 saves from Taylor Gauthier.

REGINA — Zachary Benson struck twice and Michael Milne had a goal and two assists as Winnipeg (14-5-1) toppled Swift Current (4-15-1), which has lost eight of 10 and sits last in the seven-team Hub Centre Division.

MEDICINE HAT, Alta. — Beckett Langkow stopped 27-of-29 shots and Brett Kemp set up two goals including Oren Shtrom’s winner as the Tigers (12-3-1) improved to 8-0-1 in their last nine while handing Red Deer (2-15-2) its 12 consecutive defeat.

WARRIORS 5 RAIDERS 2

REGINA — Brett Mirwald made 29 saves and Josh Hoekstra was one of five skaters to score for his club, potting the eventual winner in the second, as Moose Jaw (8-11-1) beat Prince Albert (7-10-3) to end a four-game skid.

ROCKETS 7 ROYALS 2

KELOWNA, B.C. — Dylan Wightman and Mark Liwiski had a pair of goals each and David Kope scored once and set up two more as the Rockets (3-1-0) easily downed Victoria (1-9-1), which is on a six-game slide and stuck on just one win for the season.
