Goalie Rhyah Stewart, 16, stops all 24 shots she faces in QMJHL game

The first female to play for the Cape Breton Eagles put on quite a performance in her QMJHL debut on Friday.

Cape Breton Eagles goalie Rhyah Stewart, 16, stopped all 24 shots sent her way in 30 minutes of action in the team’s 5-3 pre-season loss to the visiting Moncton Wildcats.

Stewart, who started the game, was named first star.

The native of Antigonish, N.S. got a standing ovation when she was removed from the game in the second period.

Stewart already has committed to playing NCAA women’s hockey at Wisconsin.

Stewart led Nova Scotia to its first-ever medal at the Canada Winter Games earlier this year as the team took silver.

Earlier this month, Stewart also had a shutout victory for Canada’s women’s under-18 team against the United States.
