Report: Olympique Lyon looking to sign Canada defender Moise Bombito

France’s 1’s Olympique Lyon have started talks with the Colorado Rapids of the MLS to sign Canadian defender Moise Bombito, soccer insider Fabrizio Romano reports.

The Montreal, 24, native played for Canada in its opening game against Lionel Messi’s Argentina at Copa America on June 20.

Bombito is in his second season in MLS, with this year being a breakout year for the speedy backliner. He has two goals and one assist through 16 matches, helping the Rapids become a title contender.

His rookie campaign, after being selected third overall in the MLS SuperDraft, saw him in and out of the lineup as he suited up for 11 appearances. Fast forward two years, and Bombito’s ceiling continues to rise.

“I still feel like I’m inexperienced, but with these big games, I’m going with the flow and playing with top players,” he told MLS.com last summer ahead of the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup and Nations League. “Tactically, it helps me learn from these guys, and from my first year at the pro level, I’ve grown a little but need to keep going.”

This year, playing alongside Alphonso Davies and against Messi is only a step forward in gaining that pro-level experience.

Following a rough opening stint to the 2023-24 season, Lyon managed to claw their way back by finishing sixth across Ligue 1, ending with a record of 16-5-13. The club made a handful of additions at the winter transfer window to bolster scoring on the offensive side.
