Tour rookie Savannah Grewal of Mississauga, Ont., carded a course-record 64 at the Blue Bay LPGA event in Hainan Island, China on Saturday to jump into contention.
Grewal, 22, had 10 birdies — five on the front and five on the back — for a round that could have been even better of not for a double-bogey on the 12th hole.
Her 64 put her in a tie for fifth and just three shots back of co-leaders Lydia Ko of New Zealand, and Americans Bailey Tardy and Sarah Schmelzel, who are at 12-under.
Ruixin Liu of China was alone in fourth at 10-under.
Grewal, who is playing in just her second event as a pro, earned her tour card by finishing in the top 10 in the LPGA Q-Series. She gave up her final year of eligibility at Clemson University in South Carolina in order to join the LPGA Tour.
