Los Angeles Angels phenom Shohei Ohtani exited the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers due to cramping, the team announced.
Ohtani pitched a one-hit shutout in the first game of the doubleheader, leading the Angels to a convincing 6-0 victory. It was the first complete game of his career.
The second game of the doubleheader — an 11-4 win for the Angels — saw Ohtani smash two home runs prior to his exit. The 29-year-old leads the league currently with 38 home runs this season.
Speaking to the media afterwards, Angels manager Phil Nevin assured that Ohtani's back would be okay.
"Yeah, he just cramped up," Nevin said. "A lot of volume today for him. As I've said many times, certainly something I've never seen, I'm not sure at any level. What he did in the first game, obviously, with the complete game and then two home runs in the second game."
The Angels are set to take on the Toronto Blue Jays in a three-game series over the weekend.
