The Oakland Athletics announced Wednesday night that they have acquired Canadian infielder Abraham Toro from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for minor-league pitcher Chad Patrick.
Toro appeared in nine games with the Brewers in 2023, slashing .444/.524/.778 with two home runs in 18 at-bats. He spent the majority of the season in triple-A, where he hit .291 with nine homers in 96 games.
The 26-year-old was a member of Team Canada at the World Baseball Classic, appearing in all four games of the tournament and picking up five hits in 15 at-bats.
A native of Longueuil, Que., Toro has played in parts of five major-league seasons, totalling a .211/.282/.354 slash line with 28 home runs. He has spent time with the Brewers, Houston Astros and Seattle Mariners.
Originally drafted by the Astros in the fifth round of the 2016 MLB draft, Toro is a switch-hitter and has primarily spent time defensively at second and third base in his MLB career.
Patrick, a 25-year-old right-hander, logged a 5.59 ERA across two levels in 2023. He was part of a trade-deadline deal that brought him to Oakland's organization from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for infielder Jace Peterson.
