  • Big Papi good, current Red Sox bad: Boston reporters rip '22 team

The good news for current members of the Boston Red Sox is that the baseball focus of the city on Sunday was on Cooperstown, N.Y., where David Ortiz was part of the class of 2022 for the Hall of Fame.

The Red Sox legend's Hall call came in the midst of yet another embarrassing outing by the team in an 8-4 loss against the Toronto Blue Jays.

While the Boston baseball media was split between Fenway Park and Cooperstown on Sunday, those watching the 2022 Red Sox fall to .500 had some pointed criticism.

Steve Hewitt, Red Sox beat writer for the Boston Herald, called Sunday's performance "borderline unwatchable at times."

"The only consistency it seems the Red Sox have shown throughout the month of July is bad defence," Hewitt added in his game story, focusing on a series of fielding blunders.

The loss capped a series in which Boston was outscored 40-10, including the 28-5 debacle in the opener.

The Red Sox are now 4-13 in their past 17 games, all against AL East playoff contenders -- the Blue Jays, New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays.

Here's a sampling of reaction from the Boston media on Twitter on Sunday.
