The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired minor-league catcher Karl Ellison from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for minor-league reliever Vinny Nittoli, the Phillies announced.
Ellison, 27, began this season in class-A but has spent the last month in triple-A, where he has a .227 OBP and a 1.000 fielding percentage in 8 games.
Nittoli, 31, had a 2.79 ERA in 9.2 innings pitched with the Buffalo Bisons this season. According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the Phillies will add him to their roster on Thursday. Passan adds Nittoli planned to opt-out of his minor-league contract today, but the Blue Jays traded him first.
Minor-league players can still be traded after the MLB trade deadline, but must be rostered by Sept. 1 to be eligible for post-season play.
