The Toronto Blue Jays have reinstated Bo Bichette from the 10-day injured list and their all-star shortstop is set to play his 500th career MLB game Saturday against the Cincinnati Reds.
Bichette was diagnosed with right patellar tendinitis after tweaking his knee while rounding the bases during a game against the Baltimore Orioles on July 31.
The 25-year-old Bichette, who made his second all-star appearance this season, has 17 home runs and 59 RBIs with a .321/.352/.494 slash line.
He went 4-for-5 with one home run and three RBIs during a two-game rehab stint with triple-A Buffalo earlier this week.
In a corresponding move, the Blue Jays have designated Paul DeJong for assignment. DeJong was acquired by the Blue Jays from the St. Louis Cardinals, but has been struggling since arriving in Toronto.
Outfielder George Springer will also be out of the lineup for the second day in a row as Davis Schneider slots in as designated hitter.
The Blue Jays fell 1-0 to the Reds in the opening game of their series in Cincinnati on Friday night. Reds DH Christian Encarnacion-Strand homered in the bottom of the ninth inning to score the game's lone run and walk off the Blue Jays.
Meanwhile, the Seattle Mariners (67-55) overtook Toronto (67-56) in the race for the final American League wild-card spot with a 2-0 victory over the Houston Astros.
