The Toronto Blue Jays have activated second baseman Davis Schneider ahead of their weekend series with the Boston Red Sox.
Toronto could not activate Schneider for a major league game until he was added to the 40-man roster. To make room, right-handed pitcher Thomas Hatch has been designated for assignment.
The Blue Jays also reinstated reliever Jay Jackson from the family medical emergency list and will be active for tonight’s game. To make room for Jackson, infielder Ernie Clement has been optioned to Triple-A Buffalo.
Schneider, 24, is slashing .275/.416/.553 with 21 home runs and 64 RBIs with the Buffalo Bisons this season. He is the Blue Jays' 28th-ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline.
The five-foot-nine second baseman was drafted by the Blue Jays in the 28th round of the 2017 MLB Draft out of Eastern High School.
Schneider will join a Blue Jays team that's struggling offensively as of late. The Blue Jays are coming off a seven-game homestand against the Angels and Orioles in which they scored just 22 runs and finished with a 3-4 record.
The series with the Red Sox could have large ramifications on the American League wild-card race. The Blue Jays enter play Friday in the third wild-card spot with a 60-50 record, just two games ahead of the 57-51 Red Sox.
