The Toronto Blue Jays placed infielder Cavan Biggio on the COVID-19-related injured list, the team said Monday, after he began experiencing symptoms related to the virus.
The nature of Biggio's symptoms were not made public.
While every member of the Blue Jays is known to be vaccinated against the virus, and vaccines provide robust defence against severe outcomes from contracting COVID-19 as well as infection, the highly contagious Omicron variant and its sub-variants have been shown to partly evade the protective effects of vaccination, resulting in what are known as breakthrough cases.
Prior to being sidelined, Biggio had started slow this season, hitting just .043 across with one hit and two runs scored in 28 plate appearances. The 27-year-old has started nine of the Blue Jays' 16 games this season, splitting time at second base with Santiago Espinal.
Bowden Francis was recalled from triple-A Buffalo and will be taking Biggio's place in the lineup.
