Blue Jays claim RHP Jose Cuas off waivers from Cubs

The Blue Jays claimed right-handed pitcher Jose Cuas off waivers from the Chicago Cubs on Sunday and assigned him to triple-A Buffalo.

Cuas has a 7.43 ERA and 14 strikeouts over 13.1 innings in nine appearances as a reliever this season. He was designated for assignment on June 16.

The 29-year-old was originally selected by Toronto in the 40th round of the 2012 draft, but he did not sign with the team. Instead, Cuas was drafted again by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 11th round in 2015.

After converting from an infielder to a pitcher, Cuas made his major-league debut with the Kansas City Royals in 2022. He was traded to the Cubs in exchange for outfielder Nelson Velazquez on July 31, 2023.

Cuas has a career 4.26 ERA and 119 strikeouts over three seasons with the Royals and Cubs.
