One day after homering in his first major-league at-bat, Davis Schneider earned a flattering nickname in the aftermath of a second standout game with the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Toronto Blue Jays infielder/outfielder reached base in all four of his plate appearances with three singles and a walk on Saturday against the Boston Red Sox.
After his line-drive base hit in the sixth, Schneider went on to break a 3-3 tie with the go-ahead run on Brandon Belt's single. The Blue Jays went on to win 5-4.
"He's thinking right now the big leagues (are) way easier than triple-A. But his name is officially changed to Babe Schneider," Belt said. "He's been unbelievable for us so far. I think that's a reason we've won these last two games. He's provided some energy that was maybe lacking the last series. It's been a lot of fun to watch him play."
Schneider, 24, became the fifth player in Blue Jays history to have multiple hits in back-to-back games to begin his MLB career -- and the first since Aaron Hill in 2005.
After Schneider's single to open the eighth, he exited the game with Kevin Kiermaier coming in to pinch run.
Schneider is now 5-for-8 over two games.
The five-foot-nine Schneider, who homered off Canadian-born Red Sox lefty James Paxton in his first at-bat on Friday, played second base for the second game in a row and batted eighth on Saturday.
A 28th-round pick in 2017 by Toronto, Schneider said Friday he contemplated quitting baseball just two years ago when he was struggling with single-A Vancouver.
But he has elevated his game in a big way this year. The Blue Jays' 28th-ranked prospect got the callup Friday after hitting a team-leading 21 home runs with triple-A Buffalo.
